E-Bike Safety Tips: Staying Safe on the Roads with Electric Bikes

E-Bike Safety Tips: Staying Safe on the Roads with Electric Bikes

Electric bikes, also known as e-Bikes, have gained huge popularity in recent years, offering a convenient and eco-friendly mode of transport. While e-bikes offer several further benefits from your regular non-electric bike, this shouldn’t deter from the most important priority when choosing a bike, riding safety. In this blog, we’ll explore some crucial safety tips to ensure safety is at the forefront of every ride, whilst enjoying your e-bike’s full potential.

1. Know your e-bike

Before embarking on your journey, familiarise yourself with your e-bike’s features. Understand how to adjust the pedal assist levels, operate the brakes, and manage the electric motor. Regularly check your e-bike for any signs of wear and tear, and ensure that it’s properly maintained for optimal performance and safety.

2. Be mindful of your speed

While e-bikes offer assistance with pedaling, it’s essential to stay mindful of your speed. Respect speed limits and adjust your riding pace according to road conditions, traffic flow, and your surroundings. Avoid sudden accelerations or decelerations, especially when navigating congested areas or crowded pathways.

3. Stay visible

Enhance your visibility to other road users by using front and rear lights, reflectors, and hi-vis clothing. Some e-bikes come equipped with built-in lights, but if your chosen e-bike doesn’t, check out our wide range of bikes lights by clicking here. We’ve put together some of our top picks for bike lights and hi-vis clothing below:

Wearing protective gear is essential whether you are on a regular bike, or electric bike. Did you know you should replace your helmet every three years, or sooner, to ensure it effectively  absorbs shock from an accident? Check out our top pick adults helmet below:

5. Follow the traffic laws

This is a particularly important rule to follow when cycling on roads. Always pay attention to traffic lights and make sure to stick to cycle lanes to avoid any accidents. If turning, make sure to signal beforehand to make other drivers aware. Be considerate of other road users and pedestrians.

6. Stay alert to obstacles

Be aware of vehicles, pedestrians and other cyclists to avoid a collision. Stay focused and minimise distractions such as music or using your phone whilst riding. Always consider the conditions of the road and adjust your speed accordingly. Keep an eye out for potholes, mud, puddles, leaf piles and be cautious when approaching.

Kids’ Pedal Bikes and Sizing

In case you aren’t aware, kids’ bikes are actually measured by wheel size, rather than frame size. Children grow very quickly, so this needs to be taken into consideration when buying a kids bike. However, if you buy a bike that is too big for your child, you will compromise your child’s safety, and potentially discourage your child from cycling. Your child should feel comfortable on the saddle, be able to easily get on and off, reach the handles and brakes, and reach the pedals without stretching. We have a handy bike sizing guide to help, or we welcome you to pop in-store where our expert staff will be happy to help  find the perfect bike for all your family members.

We have a large selection of kids pedal bikes, ranging from 12” wheels (suitable for 3 year olds) to 24” wheels (suitable for 8/10 year olds). Encouraging Children to Embrace the Joys of Cycling

Encouraging Children to Embrace the Joys of Cycling

In today’s digital world, encouraging children to engage in outdoor activities can be difficult. However, getting out and exercising is a crucial part of our lifestyles. Cycling is a fun way to get your children outdoors. Not only does cycling promote both mental and physical wellbeing, but it also gives children a sense of independence and can boost confidence. In this blog, we explore the reasons why your child should take up cycling and how you can encourage them to do so.

What are the benfits of cycling?

  • Boosts physical fitness: Cycling is an excellent way for children to engage in exercise, helping them to build strong muscles and bones. It promotes a healthy lifestyle from a young age and can help reduce the risk of any health issues.
  • Increased coordination and balance: Riding a bike enhances a child’s coordination and balancing skills, which contribute to the development of key motor skills.
  • Confidence building: Mastering the skill of cycling is a huge achievement for many young children, helping to boost their self-esteem and confidence. It’s a great activity to teach them perseverance and to overcome challenges.
  • Social Interaction: Cycling can be a social activity, encouraging children to ride with and spend more time with family and friends. It promotes communication and social skills.

Tips to encourage kids to cycle

1. Start Early: Introduce your child to cycling at an early age. This could be with a kids’ balance bike, which help children develop balance and coordination before jumping onto a pedal bike.

Here are some great kids’ balance bikes:

Little Town Wooden Balance Bike Grey – WAS £99.99, NOW £39.99 (SALE ENDS SOON)

2. Lead by example: Children will often follow in their parents’ footsteps. So, if they see you enjoying cycling, they are more likely to develop an interest. Plan family bike rides or use your bike for short trips around the neighbourhood. Sooner or later, they’ll be asking to join you for a cycling adventure!

3. Show your support: Celebrate all achievements, even the small ones! This is particularly useful if your child isn’t very confident on bike. Whether your child is starting to ride with stabilisers, or is cycling down a steep hill for the first time, make sure you celebrate this with them. Positive reinforcement will make the learning process much more enjoyable for everyone.

4. Create challenges: Make cycling even more fun by creating small challenges for your little ones to take part in. Get your children to try spotting as many animals on their cycles as they can, or to count how many flowers they see. All these help to keep them entertained and motivated to keep up the hobby.

5. Get them fun accessories: Accessories are the cherry on top of any new bike! They make a bike more personalised and encourage the owner to take pride in their belonging. Whether it’s a cool new helmet, a funky bell, or even a fancy water bottle – these small additions could really help to encourage your child to look forward to cycling.
